Studying Abroad in Amsterdam

When considering where you should study abroad, Amsterdam should definitely be at the top of your list. While many students go to Italy, England, or South Africa to study abroad, Amsterdam offers a unique and comfortable experience for American students. With gorgeous views along the canals downtown to the tulip fields just outside of the city and highly ranked universities, students can experience what life in Europe is like while studying abroad in Amsterdam.

Highly Ranked Universities

Europe is known for having a great education system with universities that are highly ranked globally. If you take your education seriously and enjoy being in a classroom, then studying abroad in Amsterdam may be the best place for you. Think about all of the opportunities that could be presented to you while networking in Amsterdam with professors and classmates!

There are many university programs that are offered in English, too. So, you don’t have to worry about knowing or learning Dutch while studying abroad in Amsterdam.

Open-Minded Culture

The people of Amsterdam are known for being very open-minded when it comes to social issues. For example, they have legalized marijuana and are known for their coffee shops around town and the infamous Red Light District downtown. There are is little to no judgment when it comes to living the life you want in Amsterdam.

They are completely open to different cultures and love to learn about them. This is great news for you because not only do you get to experience Dutch culture while studying abroad in Amsterdam, but other cultures from around the world that have decided to settle in Amsterdam!

Everyone Speaks English

One of the most common fears that students have before studying abroad is if the locals speak any English. Most American students are not bilingual and only know English, so this can scare them away from moving to another country for a little while. The great think about Amsterdam is that mostly everyone speaks English! Even the signs are in English, so you don’t have to worry about getting lost or confused.

While a lot of people do speak English, it is still important to learn some Dutch words and phrases while studying abroad in Amsterdam. It is a sign of respect to the Dutch people that you are open to learning their culture and customs while you live in their country.

You’ll Be Busy

You don’t have to worry about ever being bored while studying abroad in Amsterdam. There is always something happening in the city, whether it’s a concert, a festival, or a new art exhibition at a museum, you’ll never feel lost without something on your calendar. While studying abroad, it’s important to get out as much as you can! While you’re there to take classes, the most important lessons you learn will be out on the town from real-life experiences. Sometimes just wandering around and exploring the city for a few hours is the best way to learn.

Bikes are Everywhere

The great thing about European countries is that they are environmentally conscious. They have recycling bins everywhere and try their best to keep their carbon footprint down. You’ll notice while studying abroad in Amsterdam that most people will prefer to ride bikes over driving cars. The streets are very narrow downtown so it’s much easier to get around on a bike than in a car.

It’s a good idea to rent or even buy a bike while studying abroad in Amsterdam so you can get around easily. Not only will you keep your carbon footprint down, but you’ll also get some great exercise!

It’s Easier to Travel Around

Living in the United States makes it very difficult to travel abroad to different countries. It’s always an expensive flight to reach another country. The beauty of studying in Amsterdam is that you can be in another country in just an hour or so without even stepping on a plane! It isn’t uncommon for students who are studying abroad to take weekend trips to different countries throughout Europe. Some people even choose to do day trips to London or Paris from Amsterdam thanks to the advanced and comfortable trains. Just because you are studying abroad in Amsterdam doesn’t mean you have to stay in the Netherlands the whole time.

Live in Amsterdam for a Semester

While studying abroad in Amsterdam, you will have the opportunity to experience a new culture while living in a different country for a semester. You’ll meet people from all over the world and learn life lessons that you never knew you needed. Not only will you experience life in another country, but you’ll also have the chance to travel all over Europe. If you have a chance to study abroad in Amsterdam, go for it!
