Confessions of a Straightedge

I’m what you would call, well, a try-hard. I will stay up all day and night working on a project, but I’m not a “geek” in the traditional sense. I work crazy hard in school, but I’m not going to tweak out over the new sci-fi movie. ¬†Really, I’m anomalous to most of my peers; I love hot tea, wear t-shirts with pictures of cats, would rather read a good book than watch TV, and play Led Zeppelin on repeat. However, none of this means I am any better than anyone else, it just makes me a little.. quirky.

I suppose one of my more interesting quirks is that I’ve never drank, smoked, or been to a party. Ever. Don’t get me wrong, I love to have fun just as much as the next gal, it’s just partying has zero appeal for me. Although I’m no wild child I still manage to have a great time sober. I find joy in the little things, like making cake-balls for my floor, reading every newspaper available, or spending time with a lifelong friend.

I believe that you only live this life once, and you should be able to live it however you want. Ergo, if you want to party then I say go for it! And if you don’t that is just as cool too. College is a time of freedom, a time for self-discovery. I’m not trying to write some article about how weird I am, I just want to let you know that it is 100% o.k. to be whoever you want to be. Far and away the aspect I love most about being a college student is that, perhaps for the first time, you can forge your own identity. As a freshman, these first few weeks have challenged me and opened my eyes more than at any other time in my education. I’ve learned that there really is a niche for every person out there, from volunteer clubs, to sororities, to athletics, there is a home waiting for everyone.

Basically, do not be afraid to put yourself out there. Everyone experiences doubt, typically on a daily basis, the trick is just to accept that you can’t fly until you fall. Life is pretty much a series of varying failures, the point is to learn as much as possible from each one.
