Why Picking the Right Professor is Important

By Megan Porter on October 19, 2012

Any student can attest to the idea that picking the right professor is a vital decision you make over and over again throughout your college career. The right professor can be the one who challenges you without talking down to you, gives you constructive criticism on your work without making you feel stupid and some can even give you a new perspective that will change your life. However, picking the wrong professor could create the exact opposite effect. The wrong professor could not only affect your grade but also your self-esteem, constantly causing you to second guess yourself on everything and render you to feel inferior to your other classmates.

Fortunately, in my college career I have yet to come across a wrong professor. Although, that is probably the result of my dedication in researching every possible choice for each course on websites like ratemyprofessor.com and myedu.com. Nonetheless I have heard countless horror stories about bad professors. All the way from one that caused constant and terrible anxiety attacks while choosing to scream and cuss at his students in class every week, to one that wrote a humiliating note on a student’s paper emphasizing it with cuss words. Hearing those stories left me befuddled and worried. How do professors who act like that continue to have the right to teach? Is it not a teacher’s job to further our education using helpful assessing, and fun or at least interesting techniques so we want to continue to learn? Also, there are no good consequences of tearing us down. Being in an awkward transition period in our lives as it is, we are already self-conscious of everything we do and stressed to maximum capacity over our school work, that using negative methods of teaching seems to have more of a destructive consequence than a beneficial one.  Students just tend to not do as well if they have a professor that acts almost as a bully. It weakens their school work and their ability to concentrate because of the amount of stress the professor is inflicting.

However, having a great professor can make the biggest difference.  As of right now I have a couple of amazing professors I plan to take again. Reasons being, they are helpful, funny, always working to come up with new ways to better their teaching and most importantly they really do care and want you to do well and learn as much as possible. Having fun and encouraging teachers like them is a boost to work as hard as possible and most importantly, I don’t dread going to their classes every week.

I am currently a student at the University of Oklahoma. I am working on a Creative Writing Major with a Spanish Minor and I love every minute of it. Writing has been a part of my life since I was I was ten years old and I cannot imagine my life without it. My goal is to one day be an author and work in publishing. I am also a movie buff, an enviornmentalist, an endangered species activist and feel that people should have more awareness of the world they are living in. There are so many wonderful things around the world and I never want to stop learning.
