Jennifer Lawrence- "A Fat Actress"
Earlier this week I came across an interview in Elle Magazine with Hunger Games actress Jennifer Lawrence. I did not have time to read the entire interview but there was a quote from Lawrence that I have yet to get out of my head, “In Hollywood I’m considered a fat actress.” Although I wasn’t necessarily surprised by a remark like that it is still appalling. Jennifer Lawrence does not have a stick thin body but that does not make her any less beautiful. What caused such a change in our culture that we have decided that women who do not resemble a twig are not as beautiful as those who do?
If you look back to famous women of the 1940s and 1950s you would see that a majority of them have normal bodies and are still gorgeous. Take Marilyn Monroe, she is still one of the most famous women today with memorabilia everywhere you turn. She was a real woman with real curves that only made her more stunning. Why is that she is still so influential for everything except her figure? I realize that the idea that our media is brainwashing girls to believe how women should look has been shoved downs our throats countless times, but the question is why are we not doing more to change it?
Dove used to promote that women of all sizes are beautiful but it has been a long time since I have seen one of those commercials. I think it is time that companies (such as make-up companies) start promoting their products with normal everyday looking women. What would push a teenage girl to buy their product more than seeing someone who looks just like her using it? It would take away the disappointment from trying out a product and realizing it does not make her look like Emma Watson. And no I am not forgetting that the media brainwashes boys as much as girls on how they should look and how they should act.
The point is that it is time to stop promoting this image of what a man and woman are supposed to look like. With all this technology at our fingertips we can easily push the idea that everyone is beautiful and now is the time to start.
