"Boy Meets World" My Childhood All Over Again

By Megan Porter on January 20, 2013

When the announcement was made that they were making Girl Meets World a sort of sequel to the 90s show, Boy Meets World, one emotion struck me: Nostalgia. I hadn’t thought about Boy Meets World in years. For no particular reason other than reruns are no longer aired and life had gotten in the way. Hearing the announcement I got the urge to watch it all over again. It was one of my favorite shows when I was younger and has a special place in my childhood memories. I can easily say the complete series was my favorite Christmas gift.

A large chunk of the last week and a half of my winter break I spent curled up on the couch, with junk food and my dogs snuggled at my side, as I watched the show from the beginning. Watching it again I don’t love it as much as I used to…I love it more. The first season is set when Cory, Shawn and Topanga are eleven and Eric is fifteen. The show is still wonderful and funny in the beginning, but as the characters grow up their storylines become older and more relatable. Watching it now that I am older I can understand the innuendos making a lot of the jokes funnier.

All of the characters were wonderful in their own way. Cory and Shawn were both silly and loveable, always getting in trouble but eventually always trying to do the right thing or help each other do the right thing. Their friendship was one of the best parts of the show. Ben Savage (Cory) and Rider Strong (Shawn) were perfect together and always played off each other so well. Topanga started out as a strange and spiritual eleven year old but grew into a girl who always needed perfection and  who always kept the boys in line, or at least tried. Danielle Fishel was perfect for Topanga. Her and Savage had great chemistry and kept their relationship in the show alive. She also had some very funny one liners now and again. My favorite is still probably, “You yelled at me…but I’m Topanga.” Eric (Will Friedle) started out as the normal older brother always going after girls instead of working hard at school. But as the show continued his character became dumber and ultimately more loveable. When there was a serious issue happening, quite often it would change to the next scene and it would be Eric doing something to make you laugh after a different storyline had you crying. And who could forget Mr. Feeny, the best teacher in the world? I don’t know anyone who has seen the show and didn’t wish for their own Mr. Feeny at one time or another. Played by William Daniels (also the voice of K.I.T.T. in Knight Rider) he was always the person everyone turned to for advice and he was always able to help them. More than anyone, he was the person that always held the group together.

What I love most about the show is that it represents the “Old Disney.” What I mean by that is though most of the episodes are set in humorous situations, the writers weren’t afraid to tackle real issues: abuse, addiction, bullying, self-loathing, divorce, death and as Shawn Hunter was always proving, how to overcome the obstacles of living in a broken home. Episodes likes those were what made the show real and special.

Girl Meets World is centered around Cory and Topanga’s daughter. There has been no announcement of other cast members, aside from Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel, from Boy Meets World to join the cast. Though I think I speak for all the fans when I say that I hope each character shows up at least once just so we can know where they are now.  I hope Girl Meets World brings a piece of what Boy Meets World was with it.
